Bridges, Pisa, shopping, a polluted beach and ferry tickets

We left the farm and drove towards Ponte Sospeso di San Marcello Postoiese that Mike had read about on Atlas Obscura. It was built in 1923 to help the workers at the local pin factory to cross the river safely.
It’s one of the longest (walking) suspension bridges in the world, 227 meters long, 35 meters high and 80 cm wide.

Of course we had to walk across it!
When you take the first steps out you can feel it swaying. When other people are walking at the same time it sways a bit more 🙂
You can see the ground below you and in the middle I had to stop and take a photo of my shoes just to show you.

We had some lunch in Snigel and continued to drive in the Italian mountains. The view was spectacular and the roads were winding. We stayed at ponte a Serraglio for the night.

We stopped at another bridge, Ponte della Maddalena in Borgo a Mazzano, or Devil’s bridge as it’s also called. Legend says that the builder made a deal with the devil when he had problems to complete the bridge. The devil finished the construction of the bridge and in return he wanted the first soul that crossed it. The townspeople were clever and sent a dog to be the first one to walk over it. The devil was furious and took the dog and plunged into the river. It’s said that you can sometimes see the dog walking across the bridge in the evening at the end of October.

After lunch we arrived in Pisa. We found a stellplatz only 2 km from the center where we could park safely. There were a lot of parkings in town but everywhere we read about them people said they had their cars broken into.

It was really nice weather so we took our bikes to go and see the leaning tower of Pisa. When we arrived to the center we parked the bikes and went for a walk, the wrong way… We thought we walked towards the tower but we didn’t. We got really hungry and sat down to have a, yes you guessed it, a pizza! It was delicious and full of new power we went to see the famous leaning tower of Pisa. Since we’re here off season there were not too many people around which is always nice. We took some photos and then went back to Snigel.

Today we’ve been looking for things that we’ve been meaning to buy. A tent and mattresses for our coming adventures in the Sahara desert and a drone that can film it. We found it all and are very happy!

After a successful shopping trip we went to a beach called Spiagge bianche “the white beach” It’s very beautiful with white sand and turquoise water. The big problem is what’s making it so beautiful, it’s the nearby factory that send all their toxic wastewater, a mix of limestone and calcium chloride, out in the sea that makes it turquoise and the sand white!!!! As if that’s not enough, it also contains heavy metals like mercury, arsenic, lead and ammonia, it’s listed as one of the 15 most polluted areas on the Mediterranean coast. We came when the sun was starting to set but I can imagine it looks pretty a sunny day. We parked close to the beach and had a good pasta dinner in Snigel.

We have booked our ferry ticket from Civitavecchia to Tunis, 23rd October!!!
Unfortunately ALL cabins were booked so the only thing we could book was a “reserved pullman seat” which is a reclining seat… We’ve had these kind of seats before and they are ok, but we would have prefered our own cabin for the 19-20 hours on the ferry….

We are so excited! Tunisia here we come!!!

We have booked our ticket to Tunis
