We left the petrol station and continued south. Mike had read about a brewery in Abensberg called Weissbierbrauer Kuchlbauer that was supposed to be very special. When we arrived we agreed! Just look at the photos and I’m sure you will too! Unfortunately the next tour was about an hour away and we didn’t feel like waiting. Sometimes it’s good to save things to do for the next time we drive down.

Instead we continued in to Austria where we just stayed for the night at a truckstop with a nice view. We tried our new Omnia oven and heated some half baked bread. It worked really great and we’re looking forward to cook some food in it.

We entered Italy and decided to go to Parma. Just the word makes me crave ham, salami and cheese! We usually use the app Park4Night to find good places to stay for the night and this time it took us to a residential area not far away from the city center.
The weather was lovely so we took a walk to the city which was really nice after a whole day of driving. It was a nice place to see and we had a stop at one of the Prosciutteria before we sat down at a bar and had a beer. To our surprise it was free snacks if you ordered something that cost more than 4 €. If you have ever been to Italy you know they have delicious snacks like ham, cheese, pizza etc etc. Yummie!

Even though it was raining on our way back to Snigel it was a great first day in Italy!

Outside the prosciutteria in Parma

We woke up at the parking after a quiet night and decided to go to the “museo del prosciutto”. We’re normally not big fans of museums, but who can resist one like this?

We were really excited on the way there and were looking forward to know more about the history of prosciutto. Imagine the sadness that came over us when we arrived (on a Thursday) and saw that it was only open on Saturday and Sundays.

Quick fix, we drove to a “salumificio” cured meat factory, called La Perla and had a very nice lunch with Prosciutto di Parma, salami, coppa, parmigiano reggiano and balsamic vinegar. With that we had, for the first time, Lambrusco which is a fizzy red wine. The prosciutto museum was all forgotten by now 😉

After lunch we went out to Snigel and had a really nice afternoon/evening fixing, reorganising and making things better inside and outside.

In the morning we took it easy and waited for the 20!!! Ferraris that we knew were coming. It was a special sight to see and hear all of them coming to the parking at La Perla. Of course we took a lot of photos and videos, it’s not everyday you see that many Ferraris in one place.

The Ferrari group went inside the factory for a tour and we waited for the Norwegian group that we were doing the tour with.

We put on our suits and hairnets and went inside the factory. Silvia at La Perla explained the process of curing the ham and told us that 1 prosciutto cost about 200€. She later told us they have about 60 000 hams hanging inside to cure!!!

After the tour we had another great lunch and then went to the shop and bought a lot of ham and salami, thank you Roger and Lena for the delicious gift!

Our next destination was an organic farm where we thought we could see the making of the famous Parmigiano Reggiano.

On our way there we topped up our Alugas bottle with LPG (GPL in Italy). It wasn’t empty at all, we just wanted to try it. In Europe they have LPG or GPL at almost all petrol stations which makes it easy to fill anytime and we’re so pleased that we have an Alugas installed!

When we arrived it was a nice farm in a remote place with beautiful surroundings, but no cheese making factory. Our disappointment quickly disappeared when we went inside the shop and saw all the Parmigiano Reggiano displayed. We bought 0,5kg and sat down outside Snigel with cheese, salami and a Birra Moretti.

Now Mike is preparing a potato gratin in our oven and we’re looking forward to a nice dinner.
